There are some fairly affordable ($100 or so) tools that will do this such as the Autel DiagLink, iCarsoft (i980, MB-II v 2.0 or v3.0) and the Foxwell n510 Elite. There may be others, too.

I had to take it to the shop and in the end - they had to replace the valve body with a new updated unit. Thanks. Your computer needs the steering angle parameters for the ESP and with a dead battery the parameters need to be reset. With the engine running turn the steering wheel fully left and fully right several times and all should be OK. You may need to repeat this procedure a couple of times. ERIC.
