The linkage likely needs to be lubricated, although they are a little stiff at the best of times. I can't remember when you need to push the button; I think it's for shifting to reverse and low range. That is the one you need. Fan switch is usually bigger then temp sensor so you can't miss it. As for the test itself, fill the pot with water and gradually rise the temperature of it, while at the same time the switch is in the water itself (only the temperature sensing part of it, of course) and hand tester is connected on switch leads.

It had been sitting for a long time so I just purchased a new carb and intake and when installed it continuously pours gas out the Overflow tube. I have adjusted the float multiple times, it does not seem to make any difference at all.
